RESOLUTIONS ARE SO LAST YEAR. CHOOSE A NEW YEAR REVOLUTION INSTEAD.

We’re sorry to be the bearers of bad news but 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail by February. Yes, after just one month of eating nothing but spinach, avoiding social media and going to bed at 9pm, most good intentions fall over. Pointless, right?

So screw resolutions, let’s try revolution instead! In 2019, you can implement real and lasting change. Here are seven ways to do just that:

1. Re-visit last year’s resolutions

New Year’s resolutions aren’t all bad. They represent things in your life you really want to change. Yet, you just can’t seem to stick to them. This year you can change all that by re-visiting last year’s goals. Most people choose new goals each year, pushing them further away from their real goals and setting up a pattern of failure. Revolution is about lasting commitment to realistic change. So, if last year’s resolution was to drink more water or grow in confidence at work – choose to refocus on that again this year with a different attitude. This new attitude is one of determined revolution, patience and endurance.

Just because you were unable to fulfil them in the year gone, that doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t have the power to do that next year. You just need the right focus and commitment to pull through this. So stay with it, and have another go.

2. SPLIT GOALS UP

Unlike resolutions, revolution means being ready to take things slowly because it is about long-term success, not short term gain. That means that splitting your goals up into bite-sized chunks is essential. If you want to take a career step this year, break this goal into smaller achievements and then make them happen throughout the year. Track your progress and don’t forget to celebrate the small wins along the way!

3. ASSESS & ELIMINATE

Revolution is a strategic process. Rome wasn’t built in a day! This means that you need to constantly assess your goals, identify potential issues and eliminate unnecessary additions. Think about what really matters and prioritisecarefully – review your progress and adjust the game plan as needed to get you to your goal.

4. PICK ONE HABIT PER MONTH

Revolutionise your life by working with your brain, not against it. Your brain loves habits. It takes approximately one month to break or build a habit. So, focus on one habit you want to change per month and then once that is established, move to the next one. Say hello to success!

5. WRITE IT DOWN

Write your goals down – everywhere. We mean it – everywhere. On your fridge, behind your toilet, in your diary, in your phone. Text it, message it, scrawl it, type it. The more you write it, the more real it becomes.

6. CHANGE YOUR ATTITUDE

Resolutions come with a lot of pressure. They are built on idealisedversions of ourselves and our lives which are often unrealistic. For a real revolution, combine determination with realism and a good dose of patience. Understand what you can change and what you can’t. Most of all, focus on goals which really matter to you – not ones you think matter to others.

7. KEEP TRACK

Organisation is key to everything, including your New Year’s revolution! Get a calendar and create a timeline for your year, outlining your various goals. Reward yourself for each milestone and keep a big perspective by plotting it all out!

One thing is certain, New Year’s resolutions are overrated. It’s time for something new – a revolution. Make it happen with the right attitude and practical tools. Reaching those goals has never been easier! The best way to make a lasting revolution is with a trained mentor by your side.
